Words of Love: Cambridge Wedding at Tapestry Hall, Ontario

A letter to Monica and Max…

My dearest Max, I never dreamed of my perfect person because I could never have conceived that a person like you existed. Remember when we went bowling on our second date, and I bowled a turkey? Or when we hiked to the summit of a mountain and could barely walk to dinner that night? We got engaged to “be engaged” at karaoke our first summer in love. The butterflies we would feel when you came to pick me up after class on Friday nights. All our nights playing Mario Party and you’ll still never beat me.

All of this to say, we have built a life together over the last almost ten years. I can't wait to say “I do” at 2pm on May 18th, 2024. I love you, mon amour. Monica!

Monica and I have been friends since the ninth grade. As soon as I saw her on the first day of school in Miss Eric's English class, I knew I wanted to be friends with her. You're my very best friend, and as you said on my wedding day, you're my sister. You're the most beautiful woman I know, inside and out. It's been a privilege and an honour to have you in my life all these years and to witness the love between you and Max.

You both love each other unconditionally. You have a deep and lasting mutual care and respect for one another, and you've enabled each other to grow into the absolutely wonderful people you both are today. Congratulations to you both. I love you so much, and I’m so excited to see what the future holds for you.

What kept Max and I really close, even after thirty years and different paths, are those long conversations about life and death, physics and what-ifs, Vsauce and hot sauce, and how light and life go so fast.

Max seriously made a thousand choices in life that changed pretty much everything, from his jobs, school, cities, sports. However, he never changed his mind about Monica. He never stopped loving her.

Days like today make you realize life is actually going fast. But it’s going that fast because we’re in love, living to the fullest, and loved by the people we care about. Even though there are plenty of fish in the sea, Max and Monica found each other to swim in the current of life, without any doubt.

We’ve come together today not just for this complete giving away of self, this act of love. We come together as well to know that God desires to bless us, to bring us that joy, that happiness, so you might bring your love, your laying down of your life into the fullest joy that is the kingdom of God.

We pray that you will sustain one another through your married lives, in giving that gift, receiving the gift of life, of love.

Joseph Paul Max, do you take Monica to be your wife?

Do you promise to be faithful in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love her and honour her all the days of your life?
“I do.”

Monica, do you take Joseph Paul Max to be your husband?

Do you promise to be faithful to him in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love him and honour him all the days of your life?
“I do.”

Monica, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Max, receive this ring as a sign of my love and fidelity, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

To our daughter Monica, how absolutely stunning you are. We are so honoured and proud to be your parents. Today, Monica, you are the luckiest girl in the world because you have found a loving partner and a wonderful family.

We hope that when you look back on this day, you will smile, thinking that you can’t imagine life without Max. We are incredibly lucky to have you as a daughter, and we are blessed to welcome Max into our lives. We thank him for the love and happiness he has brought to you.

We are so proud of both of you and you both mean the world to us. We love you both and will always be here for the two of you.

A mother loves her son in a way I can’t describe. That’s why she cares so much about who he chooses for his bride. She must be more than beautiful, more than really smart. She must be a woman who loves him with all her heart.

I’m proud to say I know you truly are the one who will spend a lifetime with my son. That means, of course, that you will spend a lifetime with me too. That is why I’m so relieved that I love and respect you.

Monica, you've taught me that love is clear and simple. It’s knowing how much milk you like in your tea, having a warm dinner ready when you come back from a hard day at work, or having midnight conversations about our hopes and dreams, even when I’m ready to fall asleep.

Today, we’re celebrating us. It is a celebration of our love, our authenticity, and the time that has passed since our first date. We’re embarking on a journey filled with amazing travel experiences, countless laughs, and lots of puppies. A journey I’ve always dreamed of. A journey that defines life—our life.

I promise to forever bring you flowers and chocolate, simply because I love you. I promise to always be there for you and listen wholeheartedly whenever you need me. I promise to surprise you with thoughtful gestures until we’re old and wrinkly. I promise to always see you for who you are. Yours forever.
